Timber Framers Guild 2007 Western Conference: Makoto Imai's Presentation - 2007/04/14

Mike Laine, who first met Makoto in 1976 and was instantly inspired, did the introduction. Makoto Imai presented a slide show of his works and and also talked about his philosophy. He received a standing ovation from the audience.

Some notes:

• Makoto only uses air dried woods.
• He uses Japanese designs - simple, not much distractions (although a little bit of distractions is okay, but don't overdo it).
• Be organized, precise and clear on what needs to be done.
• Be focused when working. Talk only during breaks.
• Enjoy the moment, not too focused on the skills/techiques. Strive to get better (that should be a dream/goal) but don't pay too much attention to it. Be happy.
• Shrines were originally just big trees. People prayed to them. So when Shinto shrines were built, they took the shape of trees. A shrine is not really a religious place. It's for everybody.
