Hideo Ishido passed away on 2006/10/16. Click here for Edocraft's interesting interview with Ishido.
Ishido made both the main blade and matching sub-blade (tomo-osae) for the Shion. I was told Ura oshi (flatting the back of the blade) and ura dashi (tapping out of the ura) were performed by Tsunesaburo, but it seems rather poorly done to be so... For more information on ura oshi, see Toshio Odate's "Japanese Woodworking Tools - Their Tradition, Spirit and Use", page 137, 153-154. Regarding ura dashi, check out Harrelson Stanley's excellent explaination on this thread at the Japanese Woodworking Forums.
