Laney College's Japanese Hand Tools II Class - 2006/09/09

The new gate project is currently on hold, awaiting material funding approval. In the meantime, Jay has found a way to keep us all busy. Jay cuts a joint for the class. The joint is called kiguchi-ari (translates to gooseneck mortise-and-tenon joint at a sill corner - see "Encyclopedia of Wood Joints" by Wolfram Graubner, pg 100). This joint is used by the Shoji maker in the book "Japan - Culture of Wood" by by Roland Bauer and Christoph Henrichsen (ISBN: 376437022X). Although the joint is elegant and flimsy looking, it is surprisingly strong.
