Laney College's Japanese Hand Tools II Class - 2006/10/28

Highlights from today's class:
1 - Jay's completed hako-dai-mochi tsugi. The pin which secures the joint is called shachi-sen. See last week's class photos to see the joint being made. Thanks to Chris Hall for pointing out the correct name of this joint.

3 - Two low trestles. Dimension - Length: 18", Width: 24", Height: 18".
4 - Trestle: Top rail, legs, and feet are made from 3-1/4" stocks.

6 - Trestle: Bridle joint is used to connect legs to top rail.
7 - Trestle: Mortise and tenon are used to connect leg to foot and secured with pin.

10 - Stretcher is attached to legs with sage-kama (blind half dovetailed stub mortise and tenon). See "The Complete Japanese Joinery," pg 112, 223, 241 for more information on sage-kama (Note: The book also refers to the joint as shitage kama on page 112).

14 - Stretcher is held in place with two wedges.
