Laney College's Japanese Hand Tools II Class: Japanese Gate Project - 2007/02/03

Highlights from today's class:

1, 2 - Bob's homework - carvings for supporting beams which connect to the main posts.
3,4 - Bob's home shop. His wife lets him keep half of the 2-car garage for shop space.
5, 6
7 - Here's a use for a divider. Rob Cosman's shows how to use the dividers to lay out mortise & tenon and dovetails in his videos.
8, 9, 10
11, 12, 13, 14 - Carving details.
15, 16 - Cutting half laps.
17, 18 - Chopping out waste from half laps.
19 - Bullnose paring chisel (customized from a regular paring chisel after a design by Jay). It is useful for cleaning out waste in mortise, half laps, etc.

21 - Lee carving cloud pattern on a rafter.
22, 23 - Donna and Manny.
24 - Herman carving.
25 - Jason chopping out big wastes in the main post.
26 - Phil cleaning out wastes in a big joint.
27, 28 - Jim carving. Manny stuffing a large piece of donut in his mouth while avoiding the camera. Not quick enough, Manny!
29, 30 - Herman carving.

32 - Jay carving.

37, 38 - Jim's carving details. Looking good.
39 - No idea what these two are doing...
40 - Lee... contemplating whether another donut is in order.
41 - Everyone chips in to clean up before shop closes. Here's Manny doing his part.
