Jay van Arsdale teaches Japanese woodworking classes at Laney College and at his shop. His classes
cover traditional Japanese woodworking tools and joinery. Basic tools include noko-giri (saws,) nomi (chisels,)
kanna (planes,) sumi-sashi (layout pens) and sashigane (squares.) In the introductory classes Jay also covers sharpening.
A lot of sharpening. After you've sharpened you tools you can enjoy the hands-on joinery work that's a joy to look
at and do, that function as well as you can ask for.
Schedule: Saturdays at Laney College 8 a.m. - 12 p.m., 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. To enroll in classes go
to http://www.peralta.cc.ca.us/ and follow the direction for new students. The following classes are available for Spring and Fall semesters:
- 210A (Code L1733) - Traditional Japanese Hand Tools and Joinery I (for beginners)
- 210B (Code L1734) - Traditional Japanese Hand Tools and Joinery II (for advanced students)
- 200 (Code L1225) - Special Projects Laboratory (for advanced students)
Laney College is located at 900 Fallon St., Oakland CA (across from the Lake Merritt BART Station and Oakland Museum).
